By mid-November, families all over the U.S. will be hauling out boxes of ornaments from their arttics, basements, and closets.
Moreover, as the trees start to sparkle and glitter with a mix of decorations old and new, each tells a story of its own. Imagine unwrapping a delicate glass bauble your grandmother bought in 1956. Maybe you are like my family and you have ornaments that were hand-made by your great grandmother with styrofoam, straight pins, sequins, and beads. Or maybe a homemade popsicle picture frame or clothespin reindeer you, your kids, or maybe grandkids have made at school or daycare. Therefore, Christmas becomes a blending of unique nostalgia and fresh memories for you and your family. Take the time to share the memories tied to each one of those special ornaments with the next generations.
Now as the homes also start to get their festive makeovers silverbells start to be heard on the wind in the distance. Lights start to twinkle in windows, stockings are being hung on mantels and window seals, and yards become a showplace of inflatables and mini theme parks. We also expect to start seeing Santa waving from sleighs, reindeer grazing on the lawns, and the occasional Grinch stealing the show everywhere we look.

We as Americans adore lights! From the simple strands hung on the porch to the full-blown synchronized light shows. You have those that are set up in yards, city parks, and even flying high in the sky set to music, all of these light displays are jaw-droppingly amazing. Then you have those folks that even compete to have the most extravagant setup. Turning entire neighborhoods into glowing sparkling wonderlands.
Movies and Music
Ok, now answer me this, “What is Christmas without the holiday classic movies and music?”
Families all over the country cozy up with hot cocoa or cider and seasonal cookies to watch Home Alone or Elf. Or maybe It’s a Wonderful Life and Miracle on 34th Street is your family’s movies of seasonal tradition.
There are also some fabulous songs that become tradition. Are you a Mariah Carey – “All I Want for Christmas Is You” or Pentatonix – “Little Drummer Boy” fan. Or do you lean more towards “Carol Of The Bells Celtic Version” – Alexander Nakarada or maybe Gene Autry’s – “Here Comes Santa Clause”? No? Maybe you are a fan of one or more of the numerous artists that have recorded “Mary, Did You Know?” one of them being Carrie Underwood.

Gift-giving during this season of joy is where the fun; and even the chaos sometimes cross paths. Over the years gift-giving has evolved. Just as the Grinch creeped on to the scene and into the hearts of many. It is not unheard of for many workplaces and friend groups to host a Secret Santa exchange. This is where participants draw names, shop in secret and some even gift-give on the down low.

Let’s talk food. Christmas dinner tables overflow with glazed hams, roasted turkeys, mashed potatoes, and deviled eggs. And desserts? Oh, the desserts! Think sugar cookies, gingerbread men, and yule logs that look too good to eat (but you eat them anyway).
Furthermore, if you are anything like my family, you eat till you feel like you are going to explode. No matter what plans you may have for after the meal, as the women gather to clean the kitchen. The men will more than like retire to the room containing the television under the guise of “watching the game”. However, once the women are done in the kitchen they go to gather the men to proceed with holiday activities. Only to find them all asleep and the room rumbling with their snores and the “must watch game” as the background symphony.
Season of Joy filled with Community Spirit
The holidays aren’t just about what happens at home. Communities everywhere pull out all the stops, hosting parades, tree lightings, and even concerts. At the heart of New York City, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree stands tall, adorned with miles of lights and a star so brilliant you can see it from blocks away.
Churches open their doors for candlelight services, schools host holiday plays and concerts, and charities receive an outpouring of donations. The magic of the season lies in the way people come together to celebrate, no matter their background or beliefs.
